Turkish citizenship

Turkish Citizenship — 4 Paths & How to Apply

You can get Turkish citizenship in several ways. Turkey also allows you to keep your original nationality (dual citizenship).

4 Main Paths

Investment

This is the fastest route (6 to 12 months). You can buy real estate worth at least $400,000, deposit $500,000 in a Turkish bank, or create 50 jobs. You must keep the investment for 3 years.

Residency

You must live in Turkey legally for 5 years in a row. You cannot spend more than 180 days outside the country total during this time. You must also pass a basic Turkish language interview.

Marriage

If you marry a Turkish citizen, you can apply after 3 years of marriage. You must live together as a true family.

Birth

If at least one of your parents is a Turkish citizen, you automatically get citizenship.

Residence permits for property buyers under $400,000

Foreigners buying property under $400,000 USD can secure a renewable short-term residence permit (İkamet).

The $200,000+ Path

If the property is worth between $200,000 and $400,000 USD, you receive a real estate residence permit. It is usually issued for 1 to 2 years. This permit counts toward the 5-year timeline required to eventually apply for regular citizenship.

The Under $200,000 Path

If the property is worth less than $200,000 USD, you can still apply for a short-term Tourist Residence Permit based on homeownership. While it allows you to legally live in Turkey and has high approval rates, this tourist status does not count toward the 5-year naturalization timeline.

Both options require a residential property registered in a single owner's name.
